Nowhere is it written that being good or even great at something requires a lot of formal training. Across a range of professions, people who never received particularly rigorous training in the orthodoxies of their fields produce a lot of the best work. Fact is, the learn-as-you-go method, driven by the right mix of hard work and passion, is sometimes the best route to doing something interesting
Just take a look at ABQ Sweet Spot. Owners Frances Gutierrez and Kandi Ramsey weren't trained in the fine arts of baking at some fancy French academy. All it took was a spark of interest and gumption to follow it. After meeting in the PTA, Gutierrez and Ramsey set out pursuing their passion for baking in steady increments. They studied YouTube videos to learn new techniques, experimented with recipes to dial in on the perfect cookies, and practiced their decorating skills. "Our first ones were rough," Ramsey says of the decorating alone. "It was a good three or four months before we were like, "okay, good-we can sell these," Gutierrez agrees. All of that training and polishing and refining eventually paid off. After a few years running a business out of their homes, the pair got to a point where they had to expand to a full storefront to keep up with demand. In July 2018 ABQ Sweet Spot officially opened its doors on Golf Course road. Since then, they've been steadily churning out custom cvookies in a huge variety of designs and flavors. They even make their own cutters. "I design them and print them on a 3D printer," says Ramsey. "My husband taught me the CAD program and I get on there and sketch out our cutters." That gives their bakery a rather old fashioned, traditional line of work a distinct flavor of the cutting edge. From their famous almond cookies, cut and decorated as nerdy Valentine's hearts or adorable Baby Yoda, among other things, to Keto friendly green chile cheese bread,
